Changing the word "Thread" to "Subject"
My fellow Geeks,
In most Forums I see the word Thread used in place of the word Subject. However, the word thread is a Geek term. It is not an intuitive word for the average person or new forum user. As a result, it takes the average person or new user a little while to figure out that a thread is really a subject. However, everybody knows what a subject is, even a five year old. I would like to take the geeky terminology out of my forum. I would like to change the word thread to subject. I know I can hack my way through doing this as I myself am a Geek. But I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to the most efficient way of doing this site wide. A frustrated Geek, Jason |

You could go:
AdminCP->Languages and Phrases->Search in Phrases Then search for 'Thread' and start replacing it |

Thanks for the tip. However, I don't see a find and replace option. Otherwise, I am going to have to edit hundreds of them one at a time, which will be to time consuming. I guess a lazy solution to this is for me to write on the top of my home page something like "A thread is a subject". And just give into the Geeks that decided to complicate a simple thing. If I am missing something with the word thread, please educate me.
Although, I am not a fan of a company like AOL, they became successful by dumbing down there software making it easy for anyone to use. I am doing the same with my site, and I just dont want my users to be confused, especially the non technical users. BTW, I love your product and support. It is second to none. Respectfully, Jason |

Well technically a thread is not a subject, if you are looking for another word 'topic' might come closer (mind that english is not my native language).
A thread is the first post and all answers to that, thus forming a 'thread' of posts, posts linked together if you wish. Many subject could be discussed in 1 thread (although that is not very likely), and many threads on 1 subject could exist. You might also export/Download the MASTER LANGUAGE and then select only phrases, probably your board must be in debug mode to do so. You could then edit the xml-file (make sure you don't edit the phrase names, only content), and then upload it again as an alternative language. I would make some tests on a testboard before you start doing this. |
