Upgrading is not a painful process, if you hack you can use file compare programs or re-hack the php code. It is as simple as uploading the new php files and running /install/upgrade.php.

the only thing is, when i used to go to other boards i always bemoaned their lack of style choices..when i finally got my own board i went a little style crazy, and counting the new "Bumblebee" style i just made today, i've got 26 styles :/ and i've got three hacks installed and i'd need to go change the code in each one of those styles and its just like..going to take forever.:/
