Enhanced Conversation Tracking
<< Usual newbie caveats go here >>
A few minor(?) changes would greatly simplify conversation tracking within a busy thread and/or forum. ================================================== == a - Add "re: #X" to all posts that are generated via a Quote button ================================================== == PROBLEM: In the middle of a thread, a post appears apparently referencing a prior post. Finding the prior post is a pain. Changing to a threaded display mode can cause you to lose your place. SOLUTION: Add a reference link to the prior post in the new post. For example, if someone comes into a thread with 100 posts and replies to post 59 via the [QUOTE] button, their new post could be listed as: #101 re: #59 or "Originally Posted by JohnDoe at #59" And the reference to the original post (#59) should be linked, of course. This will make following various conversations within a thread much easier. It especially adds a threading capability to the linear display mode. ================================================== == b - Search: find all posts that are responses to your posts ================================================== == PROBLEM: A user comes back to the forum after posting several messages the previous day. He can't easily find who has responded to any of his posts. SOLUTION: Need one-click search (on QuickLinks?) to generate a list of all posts made by the user (similar to what already exists) but also including all responses (made via the [QUOTE] button) to the user's posts. This will allow each member to quickly see who is trying to hold a conversation with him. List should be sortable via post time, poster, thread, etc. Similar functionality could also prove useful for new threads created by the user. Somewhat similar to subscription functionality but much easier to deal with. Thanks for your kind attention. p.s., I searched all existing hacks (vB3) and did not see anything similar. If you know of something, please let me know via PM or a post to this thread. p.p.s, and speaking of Subscriptions, allowing a PM notification would be useful - but that's another thread. |

Just a bump to the top because I think this would be an extremely useful addition that would find wide (and grateful) acceptance by all forum participants.
Conversations can go on for days, and a mechanism to easily find back and forth responses is needed. And hints, tips, and/or suggestions greatly appreciated! |
