Is there a way to prevent users of a certain membergoup (banned, miserable, etc) from logging out? ie- not just removing the log out option in the templates, but if they follow a log out link (lets say they figured the url out), it just doesn't let them log out? thnx.

yes. There is a hack that does this. I believe if you search for trap banned users you'll find it.
