I'll try to explain the last one. If we define category "4", than there is an option do display links on the frontpage to all the subcategorys inlcuded in the category and the subcategory name as the header. If you'll do it, I'll bet this will get on rolling.
5) A smart counter, just like a vB integration hack could be helpfull too.

1,2 Is already done for the vB Links Directory 3.0
4 was done for the current version, but will release an addon that will allow you to specify which links dir categories etc to show on the vbhome page.
3 These are stuff I do not want to waste the development time with, but instead add it later.
