[D]Vincent what you said is absolutely correct. You can do this thru the control panel. If you are only talking about a couple of different values you would like to store that would work great. You could even reuse the avatar upload functionality in vBulletin to make picture available as an added feature.
If you are talking about more information than a handful you will want a more custom approach. Something that will have a more user friendly interface to cator to your customers and the data you are storing. Correct me if I am missing something here but I believe that the additional settings you can add are limited to text field controls currently. I have been just recently attempting to make use of that in my next hack I am working on. I didn't see a way of adding a pull down or a radial button or anything but a straight text control. Quote:
