Discord
what do you think about having a discord app attached to your site?
good or bad thing? on one hand that may decrease the activity on the site on the other hand discord may attract new users, those who can't be bothered to post in a forum because they want immediate attention (and that sums up a lot of young users nowadays) do you think the pros out weight the cons? or the opposite? |

I'm still using it as a widget and integration with the forum. I have a Discord bot running that users have to PM and include a hash which they can find on their forum profile, after that it confirms the user and forcefully changes their Discord name to match their forum name. They can not chat in the channel until they confirm their account.
From my experience it was popular the first couple of weeks. After that it slowly died. |

PM a bot with a hash? wow... way too complicated for nowadays users :P
I wasn't planning that kind of restriction, and want to make it as open as possible, might even help unregistered users who can't answer the anti spam question, or those who have issues confirming their email, I never have time to provide that kind of support because there are way too many users, and they usually harass me on youtube if the discord channel works nicely, the community could provide the hand holding support newbies need I wonder how much activity the site will loose, although I'm sure it will also generate activities which wouldn't have occurred otherwise |

Well it's a lot easier than you think. I made a special guide page that includes the hash (which is basically just a string of letters/numbers), hasn't ever really been a problem.
If you have a lot of users who use Discord then it's probably worth it. |

Added discord to my site and very happy with it, I only regret not doing it earlier.

Is this something you'd be willing to allow us (me) to use at all?

It's made in node.js so you probably need a VPS/dedicated server with root access in order to use it.
Besides that it sometimes (rarely) crashes which requires a manual restart of the bot. |

I can share you my experience, my discord server is way busier than my forum! Probably the best thing that happened to my community besides me 140 users are usually online with maybe 15 people actively conversing at any time. I have the widget on my site and also am a Discord Partner You have to have a very large community, Twitch or Youtube channel to get accepted but you get some neat perks like Vanity url, free Nitro, free VIP server and access to the Partner channel which is pretty dope.
The Discord channel definitely hurt my forum but has made the community much better, bullshitting with everyone in discord is a blast. People get involved way more in discussions on discord than they do on the forum. Also I sell ads on my site and also "advertise" on my discord so that kinda displaces the lost traffic on the site in the eyes of potential advertisers. |
