Default Question - Any reason vb.org hasn't upgraded?

Hey,

I haven't upgraded my sites - I like 3.8 - But because of spam Im thinking maybe upgrading would *hopefully* help.

Is there any reason vb.org hasnt upgraded?

They use a bunch of custom plugins which will have to be ported over to vBulletin 4.
Also I guess "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is valid in this scenario.

vb.org actually in fact did just upgrade, they ran 3.6.x for the longest time and a couple weeks ago updated to 3.8.10, they stay with vb3 because it's the best (duh).

upgrading plugins... that is not the reason... they had to upgrade all sorts of plugins just to do the upgrade they just did. But I guess you'd have to hear that from an admin.

But IMO they stick with vb3 because its not bloated how vb4+ is, it's simple, its perfect. Regarding your spam issue install the plugin I linked to in your other thread, I was having the same issue, that product will block almost all spam =)

"Upgrading" doesn't improve spam problems.

I just went back to vb 3.8.10 Beta 1 and its so much better than the bloated newer versions. Besides I save alot of bandwidth with it

The main reason why I use vB4 is because vB3 makes extensively use of tables, which makes it harder to customize the template and to give it a unique look. I can usually tell if a forum is using vB3 by one quick look.

Yes, and with vB 4 you have elements with CSS classes which also makes customization much easier, whether you are adding CSS or adding a template hook you need on the fly. vB 4 stores more data in arrays, while vB 3 will return a wall of table related HTML...I much prefer the arrays.

Both version have their merits of course, but as a coder, I find vB 4.2.x to be easier to work with in many ways.

Dave, I think you are also correct about the reason vBorg has not upgrade to vB 4...porting the products/styles would be a nightmare.

Big ole' sticky thread too, it's right at the top of the forum in bold red font "Sticky" plus not to mention the title includes Read First.

Don't mind me, my wife always "gets me good" more so than me pointing out sticky threads so laugh AT me not with me on that one eh?

We upgraded to 3.8.10 (from 3.6.12) not long ago. That is the latest (vB3) version.

We have no plan or requirement to change from vB3.
It would be a massive task, not worth it when the site runs just fine on vB3.

(JFYI, it would make no difference to spam.)

The advice for upgrading is the same as its always been, only do it if there is a *real* need, not just for the sake of it.
