To make it "very user friendly" you need a hack. But consider this system too:

Create a HTML page with all your avatars displayed and under all of them post their URLs too. Then in your choose avatar page, link this page smt like: "click here to choose your avatar" and ask your users to enter the URL of the avatar they choose to the "You can enter an URL of your avatar" form field.

Easy, simple and does not require a hack..
