Usernames & Real Names

On my forum, I added a required custom field called "Real Name." Becuase the forum is a school forum, everybody know each other and most of the members just enter their first names.
At first, I made it viewable only by mods and admins. Then I realized that people is less confortable when they don't know who they are talking with, so I edited postbit to display the real names under each post.
I think that in most of the forums where people only meet online, real names are not neccessary and you can lie about your real name. However, like a school or a community forum, in which people also see each other in flesh, real names make things easier.
