Yeah the main obstacle is your ISP. If you do not have a business account most time they will shut you down for serving a web page off your home PC.

I run my own servers at home. But I dont just have a single server running all the resources, I have Server Racks. The Racks are in a small custom built room and its Temperature controlled. I have 6 Servers total, 1 server is being used as Storage for the website files, 1 server is being used as the MySQL Server, 3 servers are being used as dedicated web servers, and the last server is being used as a Network Router. I have 2 more servers, but they are not being used right now.
You need more then one server if you are going to be hosting a pretty big site, or more then one big site. All the software you need to be running, uses up a lot of resources. They say you should at least have 2 dedicated servers, one for MySQL and the other server for everything else. My server is on its own dedicated IP, with unlimited bandwidth, it also has 100Mb/s Upload - 100Mb/s Download. Its a Fiber ISP, FIOS Business. As you probably know already, it can cost a lot of money to host a decent server at home. Anyone can put together an old PC and use it as a Home Server. But if you don't do it the right way, you will run into problem after problem down the road. Trust me, its a headache. But after you have everything set up and running the right way, you feel really good and proud because its something you own and you did yourself. Let me know if you need help with anything. |
