Edit template with hook?

I was actually trying something like this. There seems to be a problem
if you need to add a vb variable like {vb:raw somedata} in the middle
of "whatever". I tried "string" . {vb:raw somedata} . "string" but that
didn't help. 8-( Hints are greatly appreciated.
