1) Use strong passwords. Keep vb itself updated.
2) I use scripts to back up my db daily and download it locally. Once a month I go into cpanel and do a full site backup and download it. I store these on alternate hard drives one of which is always off the premises.
3) No, but try to keep up with major updates and security updates. You can subscribe to the appropriate announcement forums at vb.com.
4) I don't have any big problem with it. But sure, any time you link to someone else you have to put up with their delays.
