I've tried to install a couple of plugins tonight and most of them killed the server.

I lost connection to services and server load hit the red. i needed to restar mysql to fix.

It happened on a couple of plugins so i'm wondering if it's an issue with the server?

Some modifications have a reputation for having high server load.

But it would help if you would post a link or at least the name of the mod.

Look for excessive queries for one thing.

I tried YAFB (facebook connect thingy..)

fbconnect

User Status & Moods - this works but then randomly broke

and the DBTech advanced user tagging.

I don't use any of those so I have no idea what they can or can't do to the server. Have you contacted your host to see what they say about it?
