Header placement and HTML modification

Hi Everyone,
I've been trying to resolve this problem for at least a week. I've got a custom header that looks great and I found this resource to help make the header span the full width of the screen and adjust to different screen widths

i tried it and it worked great, the header looked great, everyone's happy, BUT, i lost the login buttons and stuff from the upper right corner as they aren't included in the code provided in the link.

i've tried a bunch of different mods to incorporate the linked html into the original header code but haven't been successful. can someone please advise me how to make the header modification work while keeping the rest of the header html intact so the buttons stay where they're supposed to be??

it seems to me that to do this the login boxes would have to overlay the table that contains the header graphic. is that possible to do?
