It was a phishing attack. Not much MS can do about it. Gmail was affected too and has issued a press release about it. The problem is your average user doesn't understand phishing. I know my mother is the prime candidate for phishing and I keep having to tell her to not open emails unless she is expecting one.

Her email client doesn't have phishing protection? Mine does. People need to remain up to date on their software so there is less chance of them being taken advantage of.
