The easiest way to check MySQL (without the hassle of posting pages and pages of server information publicly), is to download and run two very simple MySQL tuning scripts:

These scripts will work for most people. They work great for us.

MySQL issues can and do contribute directly to server load.
We currently see an occasional MySQL deadlock issue that sends our load average to the stratosphere
