is there any way to change the user group (Register users) to something else for newly registered users.

Try a search on "usergroup*" in "all mods" "titles only" and you should find one.

Then try the serach I suggested.

Personally, I just created a new usergroup for the Registered Users and changed the name of the group they initially get put into to New Registrations.
