I have searched the mods forum but could not find anything. Is there a way to show the calendar on the home page?

The calendar is enormous, so I really doubt you want the whole thing on your home page. But you could do that easily enough by just inserting a link to it (but only logged in users would see it I think).

Maybe what you want is something like vbAdvanced, which is called a 'portal' or 'CMS'.
