Default forum members with multiple IP's

I was wanting to get some advice on forum members with multiple IP's,

On my site there is a rule that you can't have multiple accounts and that you can not share your account with others.

We have been keeping an eye on some of our members and we have the issue of a member logging in with multiple IP's.

We have asked this member why this is the case and the reply we get is that he likes to be anonymous when he is online.

He has logged on with IP's from all around the world.

He has not given us a reason why this is and we are looking into whether we should ban him or tell him that he can only log into the site with the IP that he registered with. I know that members will always now and then log on with a different IP as they might just be logging in on another computer and there is no problem with this.

Is it something that we should be concerned about ?

Do you have a rule on you forum that bans proxy IP's?

What is the answer to this?

Why would you be concerned? Is your data that sensitive?

No my data is not that sensitive,
I was just interested to see if other sites do allow this or if there could be a reason why this is something to look out for.

and most of all why would you need to do it?

Thanks for your quick reply Dismounted.

IMO there isn't much of a reason to disallow proxies, and it would be near impossible to block even 1/8th of the proxies out there, so don't waste your time.

You can't block proxies easily but you can detect them.

There's no big deal here, they've either used proxies or proxies and other computers (friends, schools, libraries, work places).

1. I doubt he has a static IP, 90% of end users have dynamic IPs now. So telling him to only use the IP he registered with would be pointless.

2.

If you can detect it you can ban the IP. And you can only detect it if the proxies goes the proper route and identifies itself as a proxie which most do NOT.

3. I would never suggest blocking proxies, you could potentially lose traffic that way. Every work/school network in the world is trying to block any site its users want to use these days, if your site gets flagged as one of those sites the only way people will be able to reach your site from school/work is through proxies.
