My advice: Setup a test forum using a copy of your database. Take notes of any changes you have to make during the upgrade. Once you have your test forum upgraded and are comfortable with what you need to do, apply the upgrade to your live forum.

edit: I guess I should have read the entire thread... this has already been suggested.
