You should make a copy of your live forum, as a test forum, and upgrade that first.

Copy the files *COPY* not MOVE, COPY your existing forum files, make a copy of your database with all the mod stuff in it, and then set your copied database to your TEST forum located in /vbtest/
try upgrading to 3.7 in the vBtest forum, if successful, great, if not, you didn't lose anything of value. |

I'm pretty sure how to do most of that stuff.
I can copy my files to a new folder as that's easy using my FTP. I can make a copy of my database again, not a problem. The part I am unsure on how to do is how do I hook my database up with the new area located at www.???????.com/vbtest Sorry, I guess I'm an idiot, but I just don't want to mess anything up. |

edit the config.php file changing necessary info and upload/overwrite it
you'll probably have to set the new database server's IP |

Do I want to rename my database or keep it the same?
And exactly what information in the config file do I need to change? Do I copy all files that I see when I hope up my server using my FTP? |

Quote:
open config.php first in some nice php editor.. you'll find all the settings that are required.. (Everything is already explained in detail in comments within the file, read it carefully) |

Alright I think I have it, but we shall see...
I'm going to copy all my stuff over to my vBtest folder now which will take some time. Matt --------------- Added [DATE]1211564857[/DATE] at [TIME]1211564857[/TIME] --------------- One last thing.. I see in my FTP that there is a file called db_backups. then inside of there is a copy of my database. Can I just copy that over to the new folder then rename it & then change the config file to look for that? Is it that easy? --------------- Added [DATE]1211565103[/DATE] at [TIME]1211565103[/TIME] --------------- Or do I need to call my hosting company and have them setup a new database? --------------- Added [DATE]1211573405[/DATE] at [TIME]1211573405[/TIME] --------------- I have found a good walkthrough that tells me how to do this.. Just wondering how to use SSH, I never used it before and it seems confusing!! Matt |

If you don't know what you're doing, don't use SSH until you do. SSH is very powerful.

I stayed away from SSH, did all teh stuff with my hosting company...
Now the problem I am having is it seems that the new test forum is still calling the old database even though I changed the config file.. Also, when I try to login to the test forum it lets me login it seems to recognize my user name but then it loads back to the screen and I'm not logged in... any ideas? |
