I am just guessing they are using mode rewrite like this.

Code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([^/]*).jpg$ /image.php?name=$1
RewriteRule ^([^/]*).jpg?w=([^/]*)$ /image.php?name=$1w=$2

Then the php takes care of the resizing.
