Note that vbulletin Germany has already been working on this:
Advanced Jabber-Integration
It has just started and currently a few notifications can be sent by Instant Messenger. But more is to come.

It seems that when using this hack and tying it to LDAP authentication and openfire you can create full jabber integration.
Jabber and Openfire have plugins to also integrate practically any major IM network into your network. Read: into your chat room and vb notification system.
