Rss feed to desktop?

Hello..Im new to all this so forgive me if these questions seem a bit off. I recently installed vbulletin by request of my boss. Now i need to make some changes. He wants me to get an rss feed from vbulletin to the users desktop. Im assuming what he wants is to get some sort of alert sent to the users when one of their topics of intrest or threads are updated on the bulletin board. Is this possible? ive looked around the forums for a topic that would fit my needs and nothing really jumped out. Im running version 3.6.8. Also the webserver im running this on can not access the internet. I dont know if thats going to be an issue. I know if i wanted a normal RSS feed that would cause a problem.

Anyone have any suggestions on where i can look for my solution?

Hi Marco..Confimed...the boss wants an rss feed from the webserver where vbulletin is installed to the users desktop to "inform users when a thread of intrest is updated".

RSS Feeds are mostly used to provide generic lists of new topics. For personalised notifications a member can subscribe to a thread/forum and receive a notification by email.

An alternative route would be to connect vbulletin to the member's instant messenger, through the Jabber/XMPP protocol. This way you would be able to send real time alerts of updated threads of interest, to the members desktop.
The member can receive these notifications through many different IM protocols, because XMPP connects to a lot of them. (MSN, Yahoo, Google talk and many others included)

You would have to create a function in vbulletin to send notifications to XMPP.
