our site is a private one that requires admin activation... is there a way to automatically send a custom email to the new member asking for them to send additional info? (we phone each new member before we activate them and have to send the email manually at the moment) is this possible? or better still can we require this extra info in the registration form??

You can add more profile fields and require the users to fill them out at registration.
