There are a few solutions to this:

- Force both to lowercase
- Use LIKE instead of = (WHERE username LIKE '$name')

Edit: In contrary to the previous post, passwords are case-sensitive (the stored hash not really case-sensitive), usernames can be handle case-insensitive.
