User Group expandablity

I run a fitness website and I am just now integrating vb for the community/blog tool. I am wondering if it is possible to create teams, which would be similar to social networking "clubs."

I am interested in
- private message board accessible by team members only
- team member list, which features profile viewing
- team events
- ability to integerate with my php/mysql database of team workouts so I can post a "team workout schedule"

Is this something that I can do in VB through usergroups, it doesn't seem like that is the intent of the usergroups, but perhaps there is a mod. If not, does anyone know of a social networking script/software app that I can integrate with VB?
