I have their codes in the forum footer for forum stats. Is that what most web stats sites do? Are there ones that won't add popups? |

Is there a way to know whether the stats sites are the cause or not?
I really don't want to remove them unless I'm sure. |

The easiest way would probably be temporarily removing them one at a time to see if the popups stop.
