Preference for User Forum Viewing

I've yet to figure out a good way for this but wondered if anyone has ever written a way for a member to choose in their User CP the forums they want covered when they click the "new posts" or "unread posts" button.

For example, say I come to vB.org and want to only see new message in the plugins, mod requests and general topics area. If I click "new posts", I get everything from every forum. If I had a means to click only those forum I wantd in my User CP, it would save a lot of time.

The only way I've found to address this is by taking some of the more specific forums and making a public group who can view/post in that forum. But you'd think there might be a way to be able to turn all of them on/off in one place.
