Problem with styles ~

Hi, I'm new at all of this, but I uploaded a few styles with no problem and yesterday I uploaded one that was very nice, again, with no problem. However, I wanted to upload another and I created a new directory for it along with the misc, buttons, statusicon and so forth in my FTP, uploaded all my items and then I proceeded to my Admin panel.

After I clicked on Upload/styles (can't remember exactly), I uploaded the xml file from my computer. It stated it installed it, but not only did it NOT work, but it screwed up the rest of my styles!

The default style was totally shot and the new one had to be deleted in it's entirety because there were no images ~ nothing ~ just white and test and of course links and it put all the styles to the default one.

My administrator (thank God I have someone that knows exactly what they're dong) went and restored the backups of the all styles.

This is what he stated to me in the last posting before he left today:

I fixed the setting errors and that was that, Yes it is a bug it shouldn't put all the styles back to default if it weren't for that then there wouldn't have been any problems.

So, at this time, I'm very confused because I don't understand why there should be a bug in this at all. Can someone please explain why or how this could've happened and how to avoid this situation in the future?
