Problems with login from main page

An issue just cropped up today out of nowhere with logging in from the main page. When you arrive at index.php, you appear to be logged out. You can input your username and password in the box, and it logs you in, but then you still appear logged out when viewing index.php. Now, here's what drives me nuts. Go into any forum and all of a sudden you're logged in. Go back to index.php and you're logged out. Can anyone help?

I created a test username so anyone can check it out for themselves.
