CMS- FB Like Button error in IE

I've tried to enable the FB like button in the CMS articles. It works perfectly in FF, Chrome, etc but in IE it acts like the user isn't logged into FB (even when they are).

It shows the button and the words "sign up to see what your friends like"

hovering over the "Like" button shows the following url: facebook.com/plugins/like/connect and if you click on it the following (source code) is returned in a blank pop-up page
