Favicon has me stumped.

My site has had a favicon working for some time, no problem there.
I recently changed the logo of the forum and that is working just fine.
I created a new favicon based on the new logo.
I renamed the old favicon file and uploaded the new one to the same directory with the same file name.

The old favicon is still showing up in the browser, why? What have I missed? What have I failed to do? Yes, I cleared the browser cache, used two different browsers and so on. How can the old favicon be showing up if I have renamed that file and uploaded a new one?

I'm clearly missing something obvious .....
