A bit confused with permissions.

So I want the user to eb able to see the forum on the main page. He/she would be able to go into it and see the list of all the threads. However only when they click a thread they should be promted to log in. What exactly do I enable and disable this? I enabled "Can view forum" but disabled "Thread content" but no threads show up. What do I do?
