Hook Question

I wonted to use the GD function imagefilter(IMG_FILTER_GRAYSCALE); and imagefilter(IMG_FILTER_GAUSSIAN_BLUR); for php 5 when a user uploads an avatar and then use javascript to swicth images onmouseover() and onclick() to give the users of my site some cool avatars effects. Is there a hook were I could add this code at and is there a method in vb to check the extension type?
