PHP parsing in forum?? help

I just tried to post [CODE] in a forum to show someone basic use of PHP variables.
The porblem is that the $variables disappeared after submitting.
Example:

Code:

$my_variable = "my_string";

After submitting the post, it displays as shown below:

Code:

= "my_string";

Does anyone have a clue why this is happening?
Is the PHP parsing within the forum for some reason?
It does the same thing with [QUOTE]
