Avatar error on my forums

I just got vb not to long ago and im having a prob when ever i try to use a link my avatar you no use a url as a avatar like www.mydomainname.com/images/avatar.gif when ever i type it in i make sure its right when i go to the link i see the image i want in my avatar but i press accept or what ever to update my avatar and it does not load the next page shows up as a big white nothing i mean i cant see the next page it gets the page is not there or somthing error and i need to press back
