how do I: display latest threads on forumhome?

I'm looking for some way to display the latest threads on my forumhome page, similar to what's available for the many portal systems, only with the data apearing in a coloum down the side of my forumhome page.

I don't want to install a portal because I'm already using my own customised forumhome page. Obviously, this would need to take into account permissions, etc.

Can anyone help me out please? Thank you
