Explanation of Styles and Templates

Hi. Sorry if this is a really dumb question!
I'm new to vB and in the process of moving from phpBB.
I want to create a new look for the forum rather than the standard vB look.

I'm getting confused between templates and styles.
What's the difference please.

How do I create a new look, using a style or a template?
Are there any simple how to's?
