Forum Depths on vB3

I've been adding several of the hacks from here and I am seriously pleased with the results, however, there is one that I haven't seen and I am hoping it can be done by editing templates as easily as some of the other hacks have been.

I know how to reduce the Home Page Display depth, the problem is that I want to reatin a depth of 2 for the subforums. If you look at the attached images the first two show my forums home page and then the second page off ot that. What I want is the home page , first image to look like image three and the sub forums to continue to look like image 2.

Anyone know how I might do this, I'd really appreciate it.
