vBulletin already comes with a lot of standard features that not all of the other boards have. If you can do with the out of the box features, you don't need any php knowledge at all. It is just uploading the files, run the installer and make your setting in your AdminCP.

In your case you would probably also need to convert your current board. For this you can get a free tool ImpEx from the member download at Jelsoft.

If you want to improve your board by installing some hacks, most come with good instructions. No php knowledge needed, just comon sense and a helpfull community.

I dont know what you mean with the category question, so i can't answer on that, please explain more.
