Where do I go to buy licenses from other users?
I looked at the vBulletin site and it was pretty obvious that while they will let you sell your license when your bbs turns out not to have enough band-width to be worth the effort, they are very, very aggressive about keeping people from having any easy to find centralized place to exchange licenses.
I understand, they don't want the used market to eat into their sales of new licenses. But, where do I go for a centralized exchange place? Is there one? Having tracked bbs implementations, I'd say only one out of twenty gets enough traffic to be worth keeping. Most just go moribund. There has to be a place to go to buy licenses. Especially if you are running a plain vanilla board -- that is, you don't need any support, don't care to upgrade, etc. Which is where I'm at. I'm hosting a friend's board without charging them. I paid for UBB and installation, using a UBB approved vendor, next thing I knew, when the Y2K bug hit and I contacted UBB they told me I wasn't registered and crashed the site, forcing me to change the passwords I'd been so foolish as to share with them. Was I a little miffed? After all, hadn't they just made representations to me about how I could trust the vendor and referred me to him from their page? Anyway, I eventually started testing some other software, because the Y2K bugged stuff bothered me, even if I wasn't using the board. vbulletin has been fine, but now I'm ready to buy a permanent license rather than the year to year plan. But I know that for every vbulletin license in use, there must be at least ten that aren't -- especially with the way that people ar encouraged to buy more than one. So .... I've been looking (well in advance) for a place to buy one from another user. The official site won't even let you ask where to go -- they are zealous in protecting their profits -- which makes sense, I mean, most users would rather have them still be in business and providing support, doing upgrades, fixing bugs, than out looking for new jobs. But, the desire to buy a license is legit as well. Thanks (I've read some FAQs here, but I've only spent a couple hours at the site, so if I've missed something, I apologize). |
