Toplinks Not changing due to Theme

Hi everyone. I am trying to help a friend with a forum found here

He bought and installed the theme that is in there now but for some reason when I try to adjust the styles for the top links nothing changes. They just stay white.

I tried the same thing with the default theme and the colors change so at this point I have narrowed it down to the theme basically overriding something.

What and where should I check to change things up to possibly change colors. Maybe go direct into CSS and change? Where would that be?
