Modify threadpagenav like this

I feel the standard threadpagenav is quite dull and somewhat boring.

In a bid to spruce it up I was looking around for some inspiration on what looks good.

I'm just wondering if it is possible to get it to look like this:

And if so, how can one achieve this? What do I need to edit?
