Integrating email subscription options in user registration

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had any success integrating email subscriptions into their forums user registration page? For example, a user would have the option to subscribe to my newsletter (and change this option/unsubscribe) in the initial registration stage or later through the user cp.

The problem that I am having is that I have 2 separate databases for my users/customers. 1 for the forums and the other for my newsletter subscription software. (I use 12ALL for my mailing list) It would have obvious benefits for my users and for myself to combine these databases into one.
