The coding is different. Added mods work through the database so they use more system resouyrces. Also every time you upgrade you gotta redo them.
Core code is faster, more closely integrated, and needs less tweaking on upgrades.

The debate on SNofluffies (social Networking) versus FPs (ForumPurists) rages on but essentially VB has adopted SN for sound business reasons. The majority want it.
