Implementing an effective Points system?

NOOB ALERT.... plz read... this is not hack/program specific... just the logic of a good point system...

Can someone give some examples on how they use their point system which is usually built primarily into forums and secondarily into custom apps...

Here is my basic assumption...People build points and then get prizes?

1 -How have others determined the payouts or when ppl get rewarded... Are cash payouts done?

2 -I have members who are very active in the forum and can easily rack up points... How do you avoid abuse?

3 - Can money be made by this and how?

Just wanna see some examples and logic behind it... the payout is the confusing part...
