In my for sale section I want to force users to enter their state initial so each thread is like

TX: Stuff For Sale
CA: Car for sale

Is there a hack for that?

The closest is a thread topic prefix hack around here somewhere. It will give a drop down box which you could have the state abbreviations added to. You might be able to tweak it and have it as a required field for certain forums but you'll have to check into it.
