PM is short for Private Message.

There is such a hack for vB 3.0.x - I don't doubt something similar will come into vB 3.5.0

I have had to use the early versions of this hack a few times in the 3 years or so that my site has been up.
The times I have had to use it, it has been invaluable. Everything from a stalking user, to "game-related" political turmoil. Fact is, is it called, "Private Message"? Yes Is it stored on your database hosted and paid for by you thereby just like a character in an MMORPG, subject to your control and legally you have the right to alter, modify, view or read any information pertaining to it? Yes Is it a moral discussion about right vs wrong? Yes Will someone make the hack and many find it to be an invaluable tool for gathering information to warrant bans on severely destructive members? Yes Will I use it? Yes, but only me and 2 others on my site of 500 members will have the access to use it. |

Well actually, I was using such a hack on another board.. and I agree it is very valuable.
A 14 year old told me in the chat that some "older" guy was harrassing him by sending him "dirty" pms..., i thought that maybe he was "inventing" the story.. so i checked the pms.. and thank god I did. I had no bad conscience banning that guy from the board. :ermm: As he mailed me to wondering why.. I told him I would forward some of his pms to the authorities.. and.. I never heard from him again. So as I said, I think that such a hack can be very valuable for a board admin. df |

As long as the terms of your site (that people agree to when they register) mention that you may read PM's as part of complaint investigations, then I don't see a problem. If they don't, then you really should change them, or not read PM's.

Here is the one that works with 3.0.x Just upload it to your admincp dir and go to it in your browser http://www.yoursite.com/forum/admincp/pm.php?userid=X X= userid and you can read the PM's
I think it is sleazy to read members PM's but it is your site. You should tell people you have the ability to do so. |
